12 Mile Run COMPLETED!!

Okay, so I thought I'd start a blog - as a lot of fellow trainees are doing --- for various reasons:

A) To have a place to record my training
B) To keep you all up to date on how it's going
C) To become a 'marathon blog nerd'
D) To have people start calling me 'marathong blog nerd'
E) To start a trend where 'marathon blog nerd' is the term everyone's using.

SO.......I have been in training now for almost 8 weeks. Going pretty well overall. At the 5th week of training, I encountered some of the worst shin splints ever!! So I had to take about 2 weeks off with a lot of icing and stretching --- but continued the cardio training with swimming and biking - as was recommended to me. But the shin splints seem to have healed......and this past Saturday, I awoke at 5:45am (Yes folks I, Brad Malow, woke up at the crack ass of dawn!!), and I trucked down to Central Park to meet fellow Team For Kids trainees ------- and I ran with my 10 minute mile pace group to complete my FIRST 12 miler in 1 hour and 55 minutes! WAHOO!!! The best feeling was that I could have gone quite a bit longer -- my left foot had a tiny bit of pain, but other than that it was great.

We started in the middle of Central Park at 84th Street, then ran to the West Side Highway and down to Houston Street (6 miles). We then followed the same path back up to the park (6 miles). And it ended with jugs of Gatorade, homemade banana and chocolate chip bread, bagels, popsicles, oranges, and granola bars. And as I walked home I thought, "I SHOULD STILL BE SLEEPING AT THIS HOUR!! BUT HELL NO, I'M A RUNNIN' 12 MILES!!". Has crazy suddenly entered my brain? Nope, just runnin'!

I took my day of rest on Sunday - without too much soreness. Had some Mexican food with friends who decided that for the marathon, they are all going to write philosophical questions on little pieces of paper. They are going to give me the pieces of paper before the marathon --- so that I can open them while running and think about my responses. Aren't my friends creative? They were drinking margaritas......I wasn't.

Today I will do some strength training and a possible 3 mile run. The best thing about this whole thing so far is the personal pride I feel in accomplishing a goal I have set.....the discipline I am learning (or that it is providin me).....I haven't been spending 2am nights on the town....and I have made the consistent, conscious choice to put healthy things into my body. A great feeling.

I figure if I can do 12 miles......26.2 can't be ALL that bad! Errrrrr........ummmmm......uhhhhh. ; )

Next Saturday is supposed to be a 14 miler. I'm a runnin' - keep it comin'!!
